Pride of Place: Julie & Andrew Carter's Australiana Ceramics Collection

Pride of Place: Julie & Andrew Carter's Australiana Ceramics Collection

Julie and Andrew Carter share an affinity for Australiana ceramics, yet as a husband and wife duo they have amassed vastly different collections.

Collector Julie Carter was attracted to Studio Anna souvenir ceramics depicting iconic Canberra landmarks, notably the Shine Dome which Julie frequented as part of her work at CSIRO. Her husband Andrew Carter, a horticulturalist, collected ceramics with designs of native flora and fauna reflecting his botanical inclinations.

Together, their collections tell the history of how Australiana ceramics came to embody our reoccurring affinity to the ‘bush’ and wound up being hung in pride of place in Australian homes.
