For many film-lovers, this is Sergio Leone’s true masterpiece, even better than his Dollars trilogy (made before) and Once Upon a Time in America (made after). With an illustrious cast: Charles Bronson, Claudia Cardinale and Jason Robards are excellent; and Henry Fonda, adventurously cast against type, plays an unforgettable villain. The photography is eerily beautiful, and the Ennio Morricone score enriches the film’s surreal, dream-like quality. Written by Leone, Bernardo Bertolucci and Dario Argento. It has been suggested that the plot (Cardinale is a landowner threatened by gunslingers) was inspired by the Nicholas Ray film, Johnny Guitar.
