Paul Schrader wrote and directed this examination of the life and sensational death of Japan's most famous and controversial post-war writer. Three of Mishima's books are theatrically realised as signposts to his character development with the fourth chapter as a realistic representation of his last days. The film's drama is heightened with a strong colour palette and a powerful Philip Glass score which is still amongst his most popular. Although initially supported by the Mishima estate and partly Japanese financed, the notoriety of this Francis Ford Coppola and George Lucas produced film, has resulted in an ongoing ban in Japan.
