Strawberries and balsamic vinegar, cheddar and apple—and let’s add to the list of flavours that shouldn’t go together, but do: golden-age-of-studio-animation cartoon characters, and hard-boiled film noir detective fiction. Plus, of course: live action, and hand-drawn animation. This film represents the high-water mark of technical perfection in the long history of attempts to combine the two forms, and happily fuses them into a story that can have been told no other way, as a down-at-heel, borderline drunk detective must defend a manic cartoon character from a murder charge. Bob Hoskins, playing the former, delivers just the splash of balsamic vinegar the film needed.
