PETULIA (1968)

105 MIN, USA
DIRECTOR: RICHARD LESTER
CAST: JULIE CHRISTIE, GEORGE C. SCOTT, RICHARD CHAMBERLAIN

Petulia Danner (Christie) is a young San Francisco socialite recently married to David Danner (Richard Chamberlain). She meets an older man going through a divorce, Dr. Archie Bollen (George C Scott).  They navigate their way through their entanglements as the complex and frustrating truths about their lives emerge.  Petulia is a quirky but ambitious satire of haute-bourgeois America as the counter-culture and Vietnam erode old certainties.  Criticised at the time for its innovative, fragmented and asynchronous narrative, Petulia forms an inflection point between classic old Hollywood and the new wave of the 70s.  An unusual, often haunting, glimpse of love.
