Spring Tour: Ruth Lane-Poole and Calthorpes’ House

Spring Tour: Ruth Lane-Poole and Calthorpes’ House

Saturday 11 September: 10am–12pm

Free. Bookings essential.

Discover how Ruth Lane-Poole, furnisher of the Official Residences - Government House and The Lodge in Canberra, influenced the way many Australian homemakers approached the interior furnishing of their own homes in the 1920s. Writing regularly for Australian Home Builder, later Australian Home Beautiful, Ruth shared tips on decorating ordinary homes with style and good taste. With fellow contributors, architect Harold Desbrowe-Annear, landscape designer Edna Walling and architectural commentator Nora Cooper, the group provided sound advice and practical suggestions to help even the most tentative home decorators.

Margaret Betteridge, curator of Ruth Lane-Poole: A Woman of Influence will lead you on a guided-tour of the property and spring garden and show you how the stylish Mrs Calthorpe was influenced by the prevailing trends in homemaking and decorating in the mid-1920s.

Presented in partnership with The Australiana Fund.
