Tokyo Story (1953)
139 Minutes, Japan
Director: Yasujiro Ozu
Cast: Chishu Ryu, Chieko Higashiyama, So Yamamura, Haruko Sugimura, Setsuko Hara

A masterpiece by Yasujiro Ozu in which he returns to his favourite theme, the instability of the post-war Japanese family. An elderly couple (Chishu Ryu, Chieko Higashiyama), with four grown children, leave their home in a port village for a rare visit to their two married children in Tokyo. They don’t complain, but begin to recognise that their doctor son (So Yamamura) and beautician daughter (Haruko Sugimura) don’t want to spend time with them. Delicately constructed and deliberately leisurely, with lovely performances, the film portrays family relationships that are universal.
