Calamity Jane (1953)
97 minutes, USA
Director: David Butler
Cast: Doris Day, Howard Keel, Ann McLerie

Introduced by historian Marilyn Dooley. Hum-along musical stars Doris Day as the sharp-shooting, quick-to-fight Calamity Jane. She regularly grabs wild-west life by the throat and gives it a tuneful shake. However she also has a yen for Wild Bill Hickok (Howard Keel) and this is one problem she is not so sure how to handle. The situation is complicated when a beautiful and famous actress (or is she?) comes to town. Natural enemies, or do the two women have things in common? Since the fifties, this delightful film has taken on a life of its own and now, read at many levels, is a cult favourite.
