A STAR IS BORN (1954)

176 MINUTES, USA
DIRECTOR: GEORGE CUKOR
CAST: JUDY GARLAND, JAMES MASON, CHARLES BICKFORD

A Star Is Born, the story of an aging alcoholic film star helping a young film star find fame, keeps getting re-told for a reason. It can be flexible for the eras and the differing qualities of its leading men and women. The 1930s version teamed Janet Gaynor and Fredric March (under William A Wellman’s direction), the 70s gave us Barbra Streisand and Kris Kristofferson, and there’s a new version out this year with Bradley Cooper and Lady Gaga. This, however, is regarded by almost all fans as the definitive version. Judy Garland and James Mason, directed by George Cukor. What’s not to love?
